It's a powerfull Gallery system... I've been using it since 2004. There're 2 features that ponder my choose: 1. Allow to use external URL for media files (so you don't need to have the files in your server); 2. Use of image libraries (GD, ImageMagick, etc) to make thumbnails are optional. You can manually upload the thumbnails files.

there are some good user created templates if you search for them.
It's basically a PHP website attached to a SQL database that you can modify. More for the the intermediate to expert webmaster that can follow instructions found in their huge forum, although some of forum tips and tricks are in German, as this is a German company.
But I recommend it if you like to tinker around and know basic html and sql.
